Mr. Mohamed will speak at DC Internationals Middle East South Asia Language Institute about the often misunderstood Somali cultural experience through his prose and poetry. This will be a rare and excellent opportunity to learn about a mysterious part of the world that is consistently portrayed in a particular image. DC Internationals MESALI cultural lectures contribute to cultural understanding of cultures in the Middle East and South Asia and aspire to open such perceptions.

Farah M. Mohamed is a Somali native who writes pros and poetry in English and in his native Somali.  His writings and essays focus on political and social predicaments, but mostly emphasize Somali strife. His most recent poems include, Mama Africa, The Somali Orphen Boy, New Dawn in Africa and the Middle East and The Watched Citizen. In addition to the poetry, he is the author of XASUUS QOR (The Timelines of Somali History)  and numerous thought provoking and sometimes controversial; such as Queen Araweelo, Witness to Crime, The History of Somali Cultural Violence and Torn Between Two Worlds: Somali Women Struggle to Succeed in America and Keep Their Islamic Identity at the same time.

Mr. Mohamed received his Masters from the George Mason University School of Public Policy. He currently teaches Somali language at DC Internationals Middle East South Asia Language Institute.

DC Internationals MESALI provides Washington DC’s LEAST EXPENSIVE Intensive and fun preparation for Middle Eastern and South Asian languages. Summer 2011 session starts May 16. Daytime, evening and private class descriptions and schedules are at www.dcinternationals.com.

Study Abroad In Morocco!

DC Internationals Middle East South Asia Language Institute(MESALI) is leading a study abroad to Morocco during Summer 2011. The six and eight week programs will occur in June and July, with possible extentions through August. Students can choose to spend the Summer studying Modern Standard Arabic, Moroccan dialect, and/or French in the old-walled city of Rabat; the beautiful Moroccan capital overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

To maximize linguistic exposure and avoid temptation to speak English with American classmates,  all students will live separately and will have the exceptional experience of living with a Moroccan family, enabling you to practice your language of choice with new adoptive family members over cous-cous, Moroccan tea, or while watching Moroccan television. The program will provide home-cooked daily Moroccan meals, including cous-cous, Tajeen, and beyond.

This Summer program will include optional travel excursions and sight-seeing. Some possible experiences include:

--walking the cobblestone streets of the ancient cities of Fes and Meknes,

--tasting the foods and loving the bazaar of Jama Al-Fana in Marrakesh,

--hiking with Berbers across the Middle Atlas mountains,

--traveling across the Moroccan Sahara on camelback, or

--participating in the Ganowin music festival of Aswara.

Classes are conducted in a Western formal classroom environment. Instructors are at least tri-lingual, including  , Modern Standard Arabic, Moroccan dialect, French, and English. The school can facilitate all language levels. The extensively experienced Moroccan language trainers all have advanced degrees and have taught languages for many years, and in some cases for decades.
